William, 25, Trainee ACA, PricewaterhouseCoopers

During my degree course I completed several internships in different industries, including transport, engineering, chemical enginnering and investment banking.  I realized I wanted to gain a broader and better understanding of business and chose chartered accountancy as it offered a good technical grounding and insight into a variety of different industries.

I decided to train for the ACA qualification as it’s considered to be the premier accountancy qualification in the UK.  I believe the ACA provides the best training and exposure to the commercial world and opens up a whole host of opportunities after qualifying.

I work closely with qualified accountants and the work varies from week to week.  I could be auditing the financial statements of an insurance company one week and assessing the operational risks of a retail company the next week.  I have worked in our business recovery service which involves acting as an administrator for an insolvent business.

I particularly enjoy talking to the clients, understanding their businesses and adding value at the same time with the work that we do.  One of the most difficult assignments I have undertaken so far was where I had to try to understand the client’s business operations before being able to complete the project within a tight deadline.  This involved understanding and documenting exactly what stock was coming into the warehouse and which goods were being sold to the customer.

I really like the breadth of business knowledge that is covered in the ACA training.  The knowledge gained during the ACA modules has helped me perform my auditing roles with greater knowledge and confidence as well as realize that effective time management is an essential part of succeeding in the work place.  I would love to use my experiences to start a business in the future.  So for me the future is definitely bright!

Victoria, 25. Qualified ACA, Assistant Manager, Deloitte

I chose a career in chartered accountancy as it offered me a variety of projects and the opportunity to get out of the office and work on-site with clients.  Gaining a professional qualification was also very important and the ACA seemed to be the most highly regarded and well-established qualification.  It is respected the world over the offers the opportunity to work internationally.

Once ACA qualified, I applied for a secondment to the Deloitte Forensic & Dispute Services department and was almost immediately assigned to a business insurance consulting job.  It was unlike any project I had worked on before, and we had to assist the client in the calculation of an insurance claim following a fire at their warehouse.  It involved elements of sales forecasting giving me the chance to use my statistics degree.

I then worked on a forensic investigation for a week where a large proportion of my time was spent doing a communications review.  The Forensic IT team had been instructed to recover files and emails from staff computers at an organization under investigation.

I spent three days reviewing every email sent and received by a director of the company over the previous three years to look for any information or evidence critical to the investigation.

I enjoyed my secondment so much that I joined the department permanently in February 2006.  I am currently working on my most challenging project – an insurance consulting project for an oil and gas company in Norway.

I spend three or four days a week working in Norway with engineers and economists with years of experience in their industry.  At times it can be daunting but being an ACA definitely earns you a lot of respect, even in instances where you do not have the sector specific knowledge.

Bonnie, 31, Qualified ACA, Associate Director, KPMG Malaysia

I work with companies ranging from small family businesses to large conglomerates, from bakeries to banks and from manufacturing to construction.  Projects include valuations of companies, mergers and acquisitions, managing debt and corporate restructuring, initial public listing and raising capital.  In other words, any company that is looking to grow could seek the services and advice that we provide to help them achieve their goals.

Every company is different and it’s vital to fully understand how each company works and its business goals before we can give them the right advice.  This involves working closely with senior managers to be calear about the environment their company operates in and the kind of business decisions they face.  In turn, this means that we get great exposure with some very influential figures in the business world.

At KPMG, I have worked in Kuala Lumpur and in Hong Kong, especially in corporate restructuring which involves helping clients in a down cycle to restructure, operate more effectively and begin to grow again.

My most challenging and satisfying project was working with a massive Malaysian conglomerate on a two year project.  We took our client’s financial projections, worked with senior management to understand the basis of their assumptions, monitored the performance of our client’s subsidiaries and restructured our client’s loan portfolio.  We managed to create a real win-win outcome, so that our client continued to operate and moved back into a growth cycle while the creditors received a return on their investment.

Having the ACA qualification has enabled me to work for an excellent company, to travel with work, to take on exciting and challenging projects and to adapt to changes in the market that call for a different approach or different skills.  It does take a lot to become an ACA.  But whatever it takes, it’s more than worth it.
